Toa Samoa head coach Ben Gardiner has predicted that Samoa will become the first Tier Two nation to win the Paul Barrière Rugby League World Cup, asking supporters to mark 15 November 2026 on their calendars.
“Cast your mind to 15 November 2026. Put that date on your calendar. That will be the first time a Tier Two nation will lift the Paul Barrière Rugby League World Cup… Toa Samoa,” Gardiner said, drawing applause from guests at the Rugby League World Cup Corporate Dinner.
The event marked the launch of Rugby League Samoa’s Road to the World Cup 2026 campaign and formed part of celebrations marking 40 years of rugby league in Samoa.
Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa Polataivao Fosi Schmidt gave the keynote address.
Gardiner was joined by Toa Samoa players Peseta Junior Paulo, Unasa Jerome Luai and Melbourne Storm player Sua Faalogo, as well as Fetu Samoa captain and Brisbane Broncos Star Shalom Sauaso.
Gardiner said preparations for Toa Samoa had been developing since 2023, with building connections among players an important part of the team’s preparations.
He also acknowledged the support of Samoan fans in Samoa and around the world.
“We hear you… we represent you and we will continue to play for you,” Gardiner said.
He said that representation starts in Samoa and extends to Samoans throughout the world.
Gardiner also unveiled the Toa Samoa jersey for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup during the event.
Attention now turns to the national rugby league knockout stages as they conclude, with Gardiner expected to name his World Cup squad ahead of Toa Samoa’s opening match against France on 16 October.
The 2026 Rugby League World Cup will provide Toa Samoa with another opportunity to compete on the international stage, with Gardiner setting out his ambition for the team at the launch event.
