Our 2026 Honours List
I join the rest of the country in congratulating the 33 Samoans who received Honours Awards at a special ceremony during our 64th Independence Celebrations and recognize with appreciation their service to our nation.
This is the first Honours ceremony conducted by the FAST Government since their takeover 5 years ago.
The Samoa Special Award System was first considered by the HRPP Cabinet in August/September 1984.
I was delegated the responsibility to set up an honours system similar to the British Award System.
However, its implementation was paused in 1985, when HRPP broke up after our first PM, Vaai Kolone and 14 HRPP MPs joined Tupua Tamasese Efi in a coalition Government from late December 1986 to April 1988.
We resumed Cabinet’s consideration of the Honours System and Act when the HRPP became the Government once again under Tofilau Eti Alesana in 1988.
The Act provides special guidelines for granting these Awards.
It requires the Award Committee to be vigilant in applying the highest standards when selecting awardees, free from political influence or self-interest.
These special guidelines are meant to protect the dignity of Samoa’s highest form of recognition.
The awardees must therefore always represent our nation’s best, bravest, and brightest.
As flag bearers of Samoa, they must have the highest integrity and moral standards with character beyond reproach.
Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi
Leader of HRPP
