A student from Samoa on scholarship studies died a few days ago in Australia.  Very little is known of the student except that he/she was on first year studies.

The student identity and cause of death will have to be officially confirmed from the local Government scholarship officials.

Messages of condolence have been uploaded onto social media by friends on the student’s passing.

COVID-19 lockdown restrictions have made the return of many of the scholarship students for semester breaks or have completed studies, a continuing struggle for Government as well as sponsors.

The only exception at the early stages of the pandemic was when Samoan students on scholarship in China were able to make their way home via a special repatriation flight organized by New Zealand for their own citizens.

Repatriation flights for stranded Samoan citizens and essential workers are the only ones allowed at 2 or 3 weeks interval.

Newsline Samoa is following up on the student’s death for more details.
