The Judiciary held a special sitting this morning at the Mulinu’u Court House to officially call the court proceedings to order for 2021.

 The Judiciary sitting has become an established tradition started by retired Chief Justice Patu Falefatu Sapolu to formalise the work of the courts at the beginning of the year.

The legal fraternity turned out in force for the event.

Acting Chief Justice Niava Mata Tuatagaloa recognised the contribution by all involved in the judiciary process to the work last year.

Tuatagaloa also paid tribute to members of the judiciary who passed away recently and their commitment to the service.

The coronavirus pandemic during the year was noted as the main challenge for the courts.

  Chief Justice……….who was taken ill and is still undergoing treatment in New Zealand.

Constitutional changes to the Lands and Titles Court also became law during the year for the judiciary to work with.

“Whatever changes that bears on our work and whatever are personal opinions are, the overriding obligation for us is to uphold the law and maintain our high standard of service without fear or favour,” Acting CJ Niava said in her address.

“Our work should reflect our independence as members of the judiciary, for every authority is from God, hold true to our calling to uphold justice for everyone.”

Court hearings are set to return to full flow next week for the New Year starting up.
