Watchful police at lockdown road block shortly before the end of the shopping period from 8.00am – 2.00pm  today

The Savaii population is anxiously awaiting official word from the Ministry of Health if the COVID  virus has reached the big island yet.

None so far since the first case was announced on Friday night by the Prime Minister.

Newsline Samoa was contacted directly by several island residents to confirm a host of unofficial reports circulating that the virus is already on the island.

Many of the Government officials based in Savaii have reportedly warned their families to stay home because the virus is already on the island.

Newsline Samoa attempts to reach the official sources for answers to worried inquiries from Savaii were unsuccessful at the time of putting this story together.

Among unconfirmed reports filtering out of the big island that could not be officially verified  is of health and police workers standing ready to respond to the call to service.

All interisland ferry travels to Savaii are halted as part of the COVID health security lockdown effective today and will continue until midnight next Tuesday.

The same restrictions are effective for other public transport mainly buses and taxis that left the roads of urban Apia virtually empty.

The official count confirmed so far is 45 cases without any breakdown of where these people are from.
