The Samoa First Political Party (SFPP) is officially listing its candidates for the 2021 General Elections tomorrow, Wednesday 7 October 2020 in Savai’i.

“We’ve selected to make the announcement in Salelologa this week because most of our candidates are from there,” a spokesperson for the SFPP disclosed.

Yet to be explained is why the party is popular with candidates on the big island.

The SFPP is new to the political scene and the upcoming general elections will be its first.   The party, however, is no stranger to the general public, largely as protesters of new customary land ownership laws.

“No we are not part of the coalition of political parties,” the spokesperson added when asked about it.

“We were together with the SNDP but they have joined the coalition.”

The SFPP and the Tautua Samoa are two of the political parties opting not to join any political grouping. Several political parties are now under the political umbrella of the newly former FAST political party to run as a group.

Political parties have been busy recruiting candidate with the official period of nomination with the Office of the Electoral Commissioner set to run from the 12th to the 23rd of October 2020.

The Government’s ruling Human Rights Protection Party, HRPP, has reportedly registered 120 candidates with more expected in the lead up to the nomination period.

Not included in the HRPP registered candidates so far are the incumbent Members of Parliament.

The majority of them are seeking re-election next year under the party banner with the exception of three others who left recently to lead the new political coalition.
