Selected teams from Ministries and Corporations raced from Malaefatu Park to Mulinu’u and back on Thursday morning to put fun into the celebration of the National Renewable Day.

One side of the road was sealed off  from the Malaefatu Park where the triathlon race started all the way to the Mulinu’u turnaround point and back.

The race started off with a sprint of about 100m in a relay of runners before the bike riders took over and the  sprint back to the finishing line by wheelbarrow runners.

The police bike riding squad represented one of the 8 Government bodies that came together to mark the special event.

The riders took the longer route to the Mulinu’u roundabout before they turned back to tag their wheelbarrow team runners  who made the 100m sprint to the Malaefatu Park.

On a more serious note the National Renewable Energy Day celebrates and emphasizes the importance of sourcing clean and sustainable energy to generate electricity, gas for cooking and clean fuels for transportation, according to organisers.

The event is celebrated every year  and due to COVID-19 restrictions the organisers of the events limited the activities to avoid public gatherings.

“The aim of this activity is to raise awareness of the importance of traditional mobility and sustainable transportation methods in reducing GHG emissions,” organisers of the day explained.

“To remind the participants and all of Samoa that traditional transportation is fun, it is a good form of exercise and free of cost rather than relying on vehicles that is costly with the fluctuation of petrol prices.”

The selected theme for this year is “Biomass Resources for Clean Energy Production”.

The theme “reflects and emphasizes the importance of integration of renewable energy projects and communities’ commitment to Samoa’s energy transition from a fossil fueled economy into a green economy.”

The second main focus to celebrate renewable energy was the opening today of the Afolau Biomass Gas Plant to become the first in Samoa to help produce electricity. (see other story)
