APIA, Samoa – Prime Minister LaaulioleMalietoa Leuatea Schmidt has apologised after historical video footage emerged showing him using the words “Heil Hitler” and making a gesture associated with Nazi Germany at a private family gathering in Savai’i in 2007.

In a statement issued today, the Prime Minister said he had been made aware of the footage, which has been reported in the media.

He acknowledged that the words and gesture were inappropriate and capable of causing offence and hurt, regardless of the context in which they were made.

“I apologise for using them,” the Prime Minister said.

La’auli said he rejected Nazism, antisemitism, racism and all forms of political extremism, saying the views shown in the footage did not reflect his personal beliefs or the values of the Government and people of Samoa.

He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to Samoa’s constitutional democracy, including respect for human dignity, the rule of law, Parliament, the courts, traditional institutions and freedom of expression.

The Prime Minister said public office holders must be prepared to listen and take responsibility when criticism is justified.

He said his focus would remain on addressing Samoa’s economic and social challenges, strengthening the economy, creating opportunities and serving the people of Samoa.

“I consider this matter addressed as I remain focused on the huge responsibilities ahead of us all,” he said.

The statement was issued through the Press & Communication Division of the Ministry of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
