Luma Va’ai took on his father’s challenge four years ago to become what’s believed to be the second Samoan student in the history of Suva Grammar School to become dux.
Yesterday, he succeeded with that challenge. His elder brother, Century Va’ai was said to be the first Samoan to be dux of Suva Grammar School in 2016.
“I can recall when I was in Year 9, my big brother was awarded the dux award,” he said.
“That night, after our family devotion, my dad challenged me to try and accomplish the same thing, and four years later, I got it.”
“It was a tough year because COVID-19 made us get our notes online.
“There were times where I did not have data to access my notes but through the love and support of my parents, they made it possible.”
His father, who is the Pacific Theological College principal Reverend Professor Dr Upolu Va’ai said: “As his parents, we will show our support in whichever way we can.
“He has achieved all these because of his faith, commitment and resilience despite the pressures of COVID-19.
“We are proud of him because he has both solid educational and spiritual values in a way that he has his own weekly routine of fasting and praying.” Luma also received awards for: Highest score for the school in Year 12, External Examination, First place Year 13 top student in Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. He hails from Sataua Village, Satupaitea in Samoa with maternal links to Tiavea.
He dedicated all his awards to his family, his late grandmother and family back in Samoa.
