The Government of Japan has handed over a mobile clinic vehicle and twenty units of
medical equipment to the National Kidney Foundation of Samoa (NKFS) marking an
important step towards improving access to healthcare services for communities across
Samoa.
H.E. Mr. FUJII Kazuhiro, Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan
represented the Government of Japan at the handover ceremony held earlier today (27
October) at the NKFS compound, attended by representatives of NKFS, the Ministry of
Health and other distinguished guests.
The project was made possible through a grant of SAT 349,413 under Japan’s Grant
Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
The medical equipment includes cholesterol and diabetes testing devices, blood pressure
monitors, stethoscopes and weighing scales, among other essential items. The mobile clinic
vehicle is the first of its kind for the Foundation that will significantly strengthen its capacity
to deliver outreach examinations and health services to communities across Samoa.
Through this assistance, approximately 3,725 individuals annually are expected to benefit
from kidney examinations, supporting the early detection of kidney disease and other health
risks and contributing to improved health outcomes. In addition, the Foundation’s health
awareness activities are expected to reach approximately 19,300 individuals each year,
Japan’s assistance to Samoa’s healthcare sector extends beyond the provision of vehicles and
medical equipment. Over the years, Japan has supported various initiatives, including the
development of the Faculty of Health Science building at the National University of Samoa,
further strengthening people-to-people ties and cooperation between the two countries.
Furthermore, Japan’s support to NKFS through the GGP program exemplifies its dedication
to human security and grass-roots development.
The project reflects Japan’s continuous commitment to support the efforts by the people and
Government of Samoa to ensure human security and to further strengthen the longstanding
bonds of friendship or Kizuna between Japan and Samoa.
