An African leader reportedly once said…. “every time China visits we get a hospital, every time Britain visits we get a lecture.”
Sounds familiar? There’s a certain down to earth ring of truth to that when you run it against all the talk we’ve been getting from our Aussie and Kiwi neighbours about our ‘Pacific Family’.
Firstly it was by the Australian Foreign Affairs Minister and we are now starting to hear her New Zealand counter part doing it to.
All was sparked by China’s Foreign Affairs Minister’s visit to offer security support for island members including Samoa.
The Solomon Is. has signed up to China’s offer. Help was offered and they have taken it.
What Samoa and the other countries got from Australia was a lecture with a patronizing emphasis on ‘Pacific Family’.
C’mon! Our so called family members maybe second class economic citizens but they’re not stupid.
Try and be real for a change.
