Chief Justice Satiu Simativa Perese released an official statement last night, Monday 26th April, to emphasize the need to trust the judges of the court at this sensitive time in the aftermath of the general elections.
The head of the Judiciary acknowledged the state of uncertainty the country is in as the national focus shifts to a ruling of the Supreme Court that may decide the election of a new Government.
“I acknowledge we are in a state of uncertainty after the General Election, but I wish to reassure ourselves as a community, that the role of the Judiciary as the Independent Branch of Government is to do right by all manner of people, without fear or favour affection or ill will,” CJ Perese re-assured in his statement.
“As sworn members of the Judiciary, we uphold that Oath to the best of our abilities so to adhere to the Rule of Law to maintain peace and prosperity of our nation founded on God.”
The integrity of the Judiciary has come under attack on a rampaging run of uncensored post-general election reactions on Social Media from supporters of the two political parties.
A panel of 3-senior justices of the Supreme Court is due to deliver a ruling this week on a motion by the FAST political party to void the election of HRPP Member of Parliament Ali’imalemanu Alofa Tu’uau as unconstitutional.
The ruling could break a 26-seat deadlock between the two parties if it upholds the motion by FAST or stay a deadlock if the election of the HRPP woman MP remains.
CJ Perese arrived back in Samoa a week ago from New Zealand where he was undergoing medical treatment.
He arrived fully vaccinated from the COVID-19 virus and was released after a week of pre-cautionary health security quarantine.
“I wish to take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation for your support and prayers whilst away on medical treatment overseas in the recent months,” he added in his statement.
“My family and I are profoundly grateful to the people and government of Samoa and our local medical professionals, as well as the medical team in NZ for your assistance and care.”
