The villages of Samatau in Upolu and Satupaitea in Savai’i split close to ST$900,000 in grant funding from Japan during the week on Wednesday 7 August 2024.
The Samatau village grant of about ST$400,000 went into the reconstruction of its Primary School building deemed unsafe for use, causing students to attend classes in nearby family homes.
The Satupaitea village grant came to about $458,000 needed to upgrade the water supply system, starting to fall apart for the whole district.
Japan’s Ambassador to Samoa, H.E. Mr. SENTA Keisuke, signed over the grants under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) to the representatives of the villages project committees.
The Samatau Primary School reconstruction project involves a single-story classroom building that will include eight classrooms, a library, a staff room and a principal’s office.
A safe and proper educational environment is expected to significantly improve the quality of basic education services in Samatau village from the project.
The grant for the Satupaitea district water system project will replace old pipes, repair the water source intake, construct a new weir, and install filters, a pressure reducing valve, and a water kiosk equipped with a tap, basin, and filter at the district hospital.
Managed by the community and registered under the Independent Water Schemes Association, this project aims to secure a reliable water supply system, thereby enhancing the life and health environment for the residents of Satupa’itea district.
The Government of Japan looks forward to the successful implementation of these projects and is confident that they will have a lasting positive impact on the communities involved.
