The usual early morning rush before the start of work in Apia was visibly absent this morning along Beach Road.

Heavy downcast weather is partly the reason but the real blame is a morning earthquake placed at just over 180km of Samoa and a tsunami warning from the Met Office.

Most of the working population were yet to make their way to the office at the start of the new working week when a 6.4 earthquake shook everything up around 8.24am.

An official tsunami watch was issued shortly, it slowed up the normal, fast, morning pace as everyone went on the alert.

The Met Office did cancel the alert warning about an hour or so later but it was too late to return the township to normal.

Commercial banks delayed opening hours and others, like the New Zealand High Commission, opted to close for what was left of the day until tomorrow.

Samoa has been going through a spell of bad weather at the official start of the annual Wet or Cyclone season that runs from November -April.
