The Apia township will wake up to a public rally this morning in protest of violence against women and children in Samoa.
Public servants are leading the outcry on this serious social injustice by marching along Beach Road, to assemble in the front lawn of the FMFM II Government Building.
The large public gathering is hopeful it will spark public attention and fire up support behind the safety at home from violence, national campaign theme appeal, ‘Malu i Fale’.
The Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development is coordinating the rally this morning.
The ‘Malu i Fale’ theme banner is part of the rallying call behind a series of open events scheduled to highlight the ’16 Days Of Activism’ to follow in the coming days at the national level.
The national sports co-ordinating body for national and Olympic sport, SASNOC, launched at the weekend a national communication strategy on violence against women and children as part of the of the activism campaign.
The strategy hopes to address violence against women and children in sports in Samoa.
The 16 Days of Activism is an annual international campaign against Gender-Based Violence that begins on 25 November.
It flows into the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and runs through International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
Local civil societies and non-Governmental organisations are organizing their own public awareness exercises along the international campaign theme.
Samoa has already received international recognition for its fight against domestic violence by winning a ‘Spotlight Initiative’ Award.
