The ST60 Commemorative Banknote and circulation date were revealed at an official launching ceremony at the Taumeasina Island Resort tonight organised by the Central Bank of Samoa.

The banknote is in celebration of Samoa’s 60th Anniversary of Independence with limited circulation as legal tender starting 31st May 2023 through commercial banks.

The country’s first Prime Minster Fiame Mataafa Faumuina II is depicted on the reverse side of the  

banknote as he lowered the New Zealand flag for the first Independence in 1962.

 Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Matāa’fa is on the obverse side of the banknote to honour Samoa’s first female Prime Minister.

The banknote once it is circulated will be printed on a cotton paper substrate . It includes an updated blue and green metallic thread with number 60 and Samoa whisk and a new watermark design featuring a teuila flower with CBS letters.

The Central Bank of Samoa is the country’s reserve bank and acts as banker to the government and the commercial banks.

The main objective of the Central Bank is to promote sustainable economic growth by managing inflation, foreign cash reserves and a sound financial sector.
