Samoa Rugby Union is determined to increase women’s participation in rugby around the country, in keeping with World Rugby edict of actively promoting and improving women’s rugby around the rugby playing world.

With that in mind, SRU rugby development division, has this week called for entries for its first women’s tournament for the start of the decade.

“We’re starting 2020 with a women’s club sevens competition to get the ball rolling and we have other tournaments planned for the rest of the year,” said Ta’ala Tui Komiti, SRU Manager of Development and Competitions.

He said that this is part of their ongoing development for women’s sevens talent which includes for SRU development programmes that are continuing within schools around the country.

“One of the targets for SRU is to include as many locally based players for the Manusina Sevens preparations for the Olympic Qualifying Repecharges in June this year,” he said.

For the same tournament last year, a total of 8 club teams participated and it is hoped that more teams will take to the field when the competition starts February 22 & 29 and March 7.
