Radio communications in times of natural disasters are expected to raise public interest d at a regional seminar for top level officials underway this week in Samoa.

Pacific Island countries susceptible to impacts of climate change and the value of emergency satellite communications services are among the related issues of discussions in the seminar.

Communications Minister, Toelupe Poumulinuku Onesemo, in his opening remarks, directed attention to the specific needs for ‘efficient spectrum management’ in small island nations surrounded by vast oceans.

Pacific Island countries in particular are at high risks to the damages from climate change.

Satellite services are critical for emergency communications during natural disasters and the need to ensure that spectrum allocation and usage promotes efficient and equitable access to radio spectrum resources for the Region and worldwide.

Participants at the seminar are from ITU member states and include, regulators, government officials, engineers, academia members, technical experts including international and local ICT partners.

 Participants are not only expected gain experience and technical knowledge on key topics that will be discussed but also with the hands-on trainings on spectrum analysing tools conducted by experts in the field of spectrum management and allocation. 

An exhibition throughout the week intends to encourage networking and business exchanges between international and local ICT companies, experts and participants. 

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Regional Radio-communication Seminar 2024 for the Asia and Pacific region, is organised jointly by the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) and the Pacific Telecommunication Association (PITA).

It is underway from the 16th – 21st September 2024 at the Taumeasina Island Resort.
