Samoa Out Of Spain Rugby 7s Int’l, Too Many COVID-19 Virus Infections

Samoa is forced to pull out of the Spain International Rugby7’s tournament this coming weekend, after    many of its players were tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

The team of 20 players and 6 management officials are camping in Dubai in preparations for the HSBC organised tournament in Malaga, Spain.

“Due to the a high number of positive Covid test results in the squad before departing for Spain, the team will not be able to participate in the Malaga event”, Lakapi Samoa Chief Executive Faleomavaega Vincent Fepulea’i announced in a press statement today.

“It was inevitable that the team had to pull out after 13 players and 2 Management team returned positive test results from the mandatory pcr-test conducted.”

“We are disappointed at this latest situation but the protocols and measures in-place for the safety and welfare of everyone involved is paramount.”

Faleomavaega assured the families of the players and management who have tested positive, that all are well and taking every precautionary measure as well as medical assistance in camp.

Lakapi Samoa is to monitor and assess the team’s situation over the next couple of days.

The team hopes to return to train safely with the intention of participating in the Seville 7s in the following week.
