The Office of the Regulator is on the chase for local companies selling electronic equipment without approval which is illegal.
The sale of cellphones, laptops, drones, walkie talkies and more are highlighted in a warning statement circulated this week by the Regulator’s Office.
“All equipment that emits and receive frequency signals have to be type approved as per Type Approval Rules 2018, in order to legalise its use in Samoa,” the statement warned.
Sellers of these electronic equipment must hand in to the Office of the Regulator, documents listing them out for approval under the Telecommunications Act 2005.
Closure of business or costly fines are punishments in place for companies found guilty.
“Type approval or certificate of conformity is granted to a product that meets a minimum set of standards un Samoa and internationally including regulatory, technical, health and safety requirement,” statement continued.
Regulator’s Office staff are “looking into the concerns at the moment” but according to a spokesperson “no company has been charged yet.”
