Prime Minister Tuilaepa has defended the resignations of senior leadership members of the ruling Human Rights Protection Party as the price to pay for the political stability of Samoa.
Tuilaepa acknowledge the contribution by former deputy PM Fiame Naomi Mataafa throughout the long period of time they worked side by side.
Similar praise was also made to re-elected MP La’auli Leuatea Polataivao who took his oath of appointment in Parliament this morning.
Members of Parliament who resigned from political parties are only allowed to stay on as independents.
Any change of political loyalties by signing up with another political party will result in the loss of seat.
“The swearing in this morning [MP La’auli] is a timely reminder to us all of why this legislation was passed in the first place,” Tuilaepa reminded of the value of political stability.
One of his main concerns is the costly impact of instability on the image of Samoa in the outside world.
His worry is of partner countries withholding support for Samoa and of overseas businesses forced to stay away that can offer job opportunities for the local workforce.
Tuilaepa feared a repeat of history when Samoa once went through several new Governments within one Parliamentary term, when MPs were allowed to switch political parties freely.
He said the legislation that was put in place to put a stop to party hopping reverts the choice of candidates back to the voters to decide.
“The legislation ensures stability and peace in the country, it is not to give advantage to any political party.
“Political parties come and go whereas Government remains.”
Tuilaepa said that it was fitting to recognise the service by his former deputy Prime Minister in Parliament because it has been a long and distinguished one.
The difficult choice by MP La’auli to seek the wish of his electoral constituency through the by-election was to be commended as well, in keeping with the spirit of the law.
