Cabinet has appointed a lady lawyer in private practice as the new Attorney General.
Ms. Mareva Betham Annandale was appointed by Cabinet today during its regular Wednesday weekly meetings.
Newsline Samoa understands that the new Attorney General is awaiting official advice of the Cabinet decision from the Public Service Commission.
Mareva would only be the second woman appointed to head the legal office. Taulapapa Brenda Heather-Latu is the first who ‘served for 9 1/2 years during three consecutive terms, (from 3 May 1997 until December 2006), making her the longest serving holder of that office to date.’
The position was recently left vacant by former AG Herman Retzlaff who did not seek a renewal of his 3-year contract when it expired.
