ILLEGAL DRUGS FEAR : SAFATA #1 MP LEAANA Ronnie Posini

By Staff Writer

The threat of illegal drugs easily reaching students inside the National University of Samoa Campus is a concern raised in the session of Parliament last week.

Safata #1 MP Leaana Ronnie Posini called for tighter securities at the  gates to the Lepapaigalagala Campus at To’omatagi.

“Anyone can drive or stroll into the campus freely with a bag of illegal drugs , especially meth or ice and sell them,” the worried HRPP opposition MP warned.

“Security has to be much tighter on who and what goes in and out of the campus gates.”

MP Leaana’s warning came just ahead of a record shipment of the illegal drug methamphetamine, seized  a few days ago in a joint border protection action by Customs officers and the Police K-9 unit.

The illegal shipment of about 10kgs of the highly addictive drug is given a $4m  tala estimated sales value.

More border alarms went off today when Customs border officers again uncovered another illegal drug shipment and this time it was a plastic bag weighing 214 grams of marijuana.

“All these drugs could easily find their way into our NUS campus when you consider its central location,”MP Leaana updated his worries with the new drug shipments.

“With 3 thousand people concentrated in the compound every day of the working week, it provides for a ready market for these drug dealers.”

The MP believes the use of illegal drugs is already a serious problem with the youth and must be addressed urgently.

He is encouraged though by the strict influence of the council of chiefs in rural village he has become aware of.

“The traditional rule of chiefs and orators do assert strict control on the young people in the villages and I am fully aware of that.

“ Young people fear more the threat of serious punishment  handed out by the village council if caught in the villages.”

The more populated urban environment where the stern authority of traditional village council rule is not as rigid, is major concern to people like the Safata MP.

The NUS Campus stands out as the example of an urban environment prone to the threat of easy access for exposure to illegal drugs use.
