The Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture, MESC, is pushing the fight against gender violence in Samoa, through selected groups with direct links to the problem.
A series of two-day workshops for out-of-school youth, community and civil societies in Upolu and Savai’i, will study the issue and look at solutions.
More than 30 people, mostly the youth, attended the opening this morning of the workshop organised in Apia for Upolu.
Participants will learn more about the focus on out-of-school-youth and communities, how they are affected by gender violence and ways to respond at the local and global level.
An overview of human rights as one of the tools to advocate for an end to violence will be discussed along with key messages to address the problem and promote more awareness.
Practical examples of how to encourage solutions in the community will be among the important areas participants will cover in the workshop.
Senior MESC officials and selected personnel from the Ministry of Police and Non-Government organisations are helping build more aware of the challenges for participants.
The Savai’i workshop is planned for next week on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The MESC organised workshops is their direct contribution to the 16 Days of Activism, the global campaign to highlight gender based violence.
The exercise is being promoted under the UN Spotlight Initiative campaign to highlight the violence on women, young girls, and those with disabilities.
