Catholics in Samoa will join global followers of the faith this coming Friday in prayers to pay tribute to the passing of Pope Francis.

A 5.30pm memorial Mass at the Mulivai Cathedral will honour his dedication and service as leader of the Catholic faith

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

Samoa Archbishop Mosese is expected to reach out to Catholics in the country and the region to remember the church leader in their prayers.

His Holiness was the first ever pope from Latin America, and the Vatican revealed that he requested in his will a simple tomb in Rome.

Latin Americans were reportedly caught in an emotional shock at his death.

Vatican News reported the official announcement of the Pope’s death by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, with these words:

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.

At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.

His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.

He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized.

With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
