ELECTRICITY TRANSPORT : The friendly climate change option of electric cars and boats transport is the issue of discussion in this one day workshop at the Talofa Tusitala Hotel.
Local interest in the use of electric cars in Samoa added more appeal today, with local user groups discussing the findings from two studies on the use of this for of transport.
The number of cars, ownership, registration and market demand was the focus of one study.
The safe use, recycling and disposal of batteries, as the key to the use of electricity was the subject of the other.
More interest was shown when electric engines for boats or maritime travel was also included in the studies findings.
The strong ongoing push for electric cars and boats in Samoa is part of a wider drive the UNDP is making in other islands of the region.
The recent studies in Samoa were organised by the UN body with funding from Japan and the blessings of Government.
The transitional change from petrol to electrical run car engines has basically remained a public interest rather than a reality in the country.
The UNDP push to do away with petrol engines in favour of battery operated electricity transport, is to do overall with climate change.
Vehicle engines running on electricity, cuts down effectively on carbon gases released from petrol/diesel powered car/boats that damages the ozone layer.
The switch to electricity transport is taken as a pathway for Samoa to speed up the ‘decarbonisation’ of its land and sea transport sectors.
Recommendations from the one day workshop at the Tanoa Tusitala Hotel, will continue the pathway push to help reduce carbon gasses in Samoa.
The overall hope is the offer of support to the bigger challenges against serious environment damages from climate change.
