An official inquiry into the possible abuse of dignity and respect of Parliament by FAST MPs was carried in a motion on the last day of debate in the House on Tuesday night.
The Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi moved for a Parliamentary Committee Inquiry into the four MPs who deliberately abandoned elected duties to undertake election campaigns while the House was in session.
Former Deputy PM Fiame Naomi Mataafa and MPs La’auli Polataivao Schmidt, Olo and Faumuina Wayne Fong are the ones who stand accused.
“The report from the inquiry will be tabled for debate on the first session of the new Parliament in June,” PM Tuilaepa announced in Parliament.
An added concern is the blatant disregard by the opposition MPs to their sworn duties as elected representatives of their respective Electoral Constituencies.
The PM is also anxious for the investigation to address serious election allegations by the MPs that the ruling Government HRPP is asserting its influence in the independence of Parliament and the Judiciary.
“This is a sore that has to be treated quickly to prevent the infection from spreading,” the PM promised as the reason behind his determination to see that the integrity of Parliament is not taken lightly.
“We as leaders should act as one and not disrespect the trust we were given by our constituents.”
Parliament was official dissolved today in a ceremony attended by the Head of State in the House this morning.
The Prime Minister and Cabinet will stay on in a caretaker role until a new Government is decided after the April General Elections.
