….. kids bearing dried tree brunches on shoulders is common in the villages outside of Apia mostly in the rural areas. The older they are the heavier the weight is piled up for them to carry.
The strength these kids display walking around while loaded down with heavy weights as if it was no big deal is impressive.
For the pampered town kids used to the gas or electric oven instead of firewood for cooking the advise is ‘don’t try this at home.’
These kids have been bearing loads since they were old enough to join the adults in the plantation.
They start off lightly with something they can hold with one hand. Soon it shifts up to the shoulders and slowly they build body muscles everyday.
After a little while carrying weights to and from the plantation is a ‘leisure walk’ for them…and you wonder why Samoans are strong and rugged!!
