Travellers on the east side of Apia have some hard decisions to make at the Eva village ford crossing with the fast flowing river making it unsafe for small vehicles to cross.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) issued a safety warning just a few hours ago as people started to head home at the end of the working day.

Those living on the other side of the crossing will have to either wait for the river flow to slow down or make other arrangements for the night.

The east coast road is the only access for the villages spread out along level ground at the foot of mountain cliffs facing the sea.

The only other road option to reach the eastern side is through the interisland crossing at Tiavi down to the south side of the island.

Travellers will then have to make the drive past Siumu and Falealili villages to the eastern end at Aleipata and back towards Apia.

The drive takes several hours and there are no guarantees the other river road crossing are safe.
