Radiothon donations continue to flow for the Human Rights Protection Party, close to a week since the was fundraising last weekend.
The one day event staged from the opposition party’s Maota I Petesa headquarters raised just over $1.6 million tala at the fundraising closing deadline.
Late contributions, however, have been flowing in steadily since then.
“By 4.30pm on Tuesday (28 September 2021) the count was up to $1.7 million tala with more donations still coming in from inside and outside Samoa,” a very grateful party spokesman disclosed.
The overwhelming response with the outpouring of financial support, surprised many in the HRPP camp who accepted it as reassurance of the faith by the silent majority in the party leadership.
The funds collected are intended to meet the party costs in the upcoming by-elections with a polling date yet to be confirmed.
All of the 7 seats forced to return to by-elections were won by the HRPP in the general elections but lost them to court rulings on petition hearings.
The radiothon was the first major fundraising by the former ruling party since they stumbled onto their popular weekly ‘sing along’ of old Samoan favourites led by party leader and former Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, with his favourite ukulele.
