But now we hear US vice President Kamala Harris promised Forum leaders that an American embassy will be built in Kiribati.
Before the why question popped up, she said it’s part of the US ‘deep’ support for the region.
Just a few days ago Australia and New Zealand forked out about $1m tala to buy Kiribati a new desalination plant and electricity generator to keep their fresh water supplies going.
Judging from the scrambling response, it looks like Kiribati is holding some very strong cards.
