‘Pogisaroaroa’.

Good one Papa Stui. Took a little head scratch to work that one out.

Thought at first it was some Maori name for New Zealand but then ‘Aotearoa’ clicked in – Land of the Long White Cloud.

‘Ah so…” as my Chinese mate would say with the usual look of understanding relief on his face.

The ‘pakeha’ settlers who came later named the place New Zealand. To us in Samoa it’s ‘Giu Sila’.

‘Pogisaroaroa’ translates to ‘all black’ in Samoa.

So while to the Maoris, New Zealand, is the ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’, for Papa Stui it’s  the …”The All Black Land.”

Wonder if he’s been watching too much World Cup rugby lately?  The NZ All Blacks certainly  left quite an impact when it destroyed Argentina’s Los Pumas in the semi-finals.

Maybe when he’s off his rugby horse, there’s another popular name for New Zealand he may want to challenge himself with.

‘Land Where Honey and Milk Flows’.

“…… but isn’t it Australia where honey and milk now flows for our ‘Pogisaroaroa’ Samoans, dear?
