There is a candle light march on Monday this week in protest of any form of violence against women.
The march is prompted by disgraceful remarks made by the FAST elected member of Parliament and party chairman Laauli Polataivao Schmidt that sparked outrage at the suggestionn of violence against women.
Laauli however has stated on social media that his remarks have been misinterpreted and taken out of context.
Organised by women rights advocates which include former women members of Parliament and others, the women will gather in-front of the Parliament Building at Mulinu’u and then march on to the field carrying candles.
There will be a religious service and guest speakers to speak on the rights or women.
Humiliating comments by Laauli for women to be assembled at the Tiafau Malae and the light turned on them while the untitled men decide what to do with them, offended the women.
Former Member of Parliament Gatoloaifaana Amataga Alesana Gidlow one of the organisers of the march, is one of the protesting women.
The daughter of former Prime Minister Tofilau Eti Alesana in an interview with Newsline Samoa said Laauli may deny what he said and only he knows the real meaning, but the insinuations made against women cannot be denied.
“ We are Samoans and we understand our language,” Gatoloai said.
“ We all know what he said and whether they may have been directed against one woman but she IS a woman . It shows that he does not value women or concern about the safety of women.”
Gatoloai pointed out that women are valued, protected and appreciated for their contributions to Samoan society.
“ It is my belief as a Samoan woman I am protected in my family, village, church and country.
“Women also contribute in every area of Samoan society.
“ Women are held in respect as the life of the family. Her advice is valued and above all the trusted responsibility of the care in raising the children for the good of the families and villages.”
Gatoloai did not appreciate the insult in La’auli’s remarks about the additional seat for women in Parliament in which he had labelled ‘fa’atumu pu’ or just to make up the numbers.
This Gatoloai said demeans and devalues the status of women.
“ We all know that is not a respectful thing to say. The women’s status has been elevated but these kind of remarks are damaging.
“ I am glad women are not really worried. We remain focused on the issue.”
Getting this extra representation for women Gatoloai explained allows more voice for the women in Parliament and balances the male opinion.
The remarks made about this extra seat belittles and offends the women Gatoloai said.
The former member of Parliament is thankful to the United Nations Organisation for their continual support for the women.
The organisers are inviting also the men to take part for doing so they would be marching for their wives, sisters, mothers and children.
They also urged all the tamaitai Samoa who have been hurt by the comments as this would be an opportunity to express this.
People wishing to take part are asked to wear white and an orange flower on the ear which is the colour designated by the UN in the fight against violence.
