The two longest serving staff members of the Australian High Commission in Samoa, are taking to heart the show of gratitude by working colleagues for their dedicated service.

Mr Peter Alefosio and Lemalu Christine Lemalu were presented with certificates of appreciation by Foreign Minister Penny Wong for their 28 years of working for the Australian Government.

Minister Wong offered her warmest gratitude on behalf of the people and government of Australia to Mr Alefosio and Lemalu for their invaluable contributions to the success of the Samoa – Australia Partnership.

Both Mr Alefosio and Lemalu joined the High Commission in 1996 and have served under 10 High Commissioners.

During their time, they have seen the best of the Samoa-Australia Partnership in action – from Australia’s swift humanitarian response to the 2009 Samoa tsunami, to Samoa’s seasonal workers coming together to protect Australian communities during the 2020 floods, amongst other highlights.

Lemalu started her career as the Media/Personnel and Property Clerk, working her way through various roles within the High Commission to becoming the current Office Manager.

“I’ve grown so much over the years, not just in my career but also in the friendships I’ve built. It’s been truly fulfilling to be part of something that has a lasting impact on myself and our communities,” said Lemalu.

It is also a bittersweet moment for Mr Alefosio, who retires at the end of the year.

As the long-serving Property Clerk and Logistics Officer, he says the positive work environment has been a highlight of his time.

“The positive work environment and strong sense of teamwork has made the High Commission a joy to come to everyday. I’ve been fortunate to work alongside great people who genuinely care about making a difference,” said Mr Alefosio.

Australia’s High Commissioner to Samoa, His Excellency Mr Will Robinson, highlighted the role of long-term local staff members in maintaining the strength of Australia’s mission in Samoa.

“Diplomats may come and go, but it’s the commitment of local staff like Peter and Lemalu that ensures the continuity and strength of our partnership.

“Their dedication has been invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for not only their long service, but also the calibre of that service.

“I also wish Peter all the best for his well- deserved retirement,” said Mr Robinson.
